The National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTAs) has called for the closure of senior high schools (SHSs) in Ghana until the government addresses pressing issues, including feeding and funding challenges.

According to Raphael Kofi Gapson, General Secretary of the NCPTAs, the current state of SHSs is unsustainable, with schools lacking essential resources, including food and funding.

The NCPTAs’ concerns are echoed by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), which warned of potential delays in reopening schools due to outstanding debts for food and operations. The Ghana Education Service was urged to postpone the reopening date until these issues were resolved.

Gapson emphasized that the previous government’s assurances of support for feeding and funding were not fulfilled, leaving schools to struggle. He suggested that schools should be closed temporarily to allow stakeholders to address these challenges and ensure a conducive learning environment.

The NCPTAs proposed using Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) funds to support feeding, extra classes, security, and infrastructure projects. However, Gapson noted that this was not a sustainable solution, and the government needed to take responsibility for addressing the systemic issues facing SHSs.

Gapson stated that the association had always maintained that schools were not fully prepared to reopen due to constraints with food, funding, and logistics. He alleged that CHASS had previously stood by the government, even when issues were not properly addressed.

The General Secretary emphasized the need for stakeholders to sit down and find solutions to the crisis. He noted that even at the basic school level, the capitation grant had been in arrears for over two and a half years.

Gapson reiterated that the NCPTAs preferred students to be at home, where they could be well-fed and safe, rather than struggling in schools without adequate resources.
