The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, has suggested that parents should bear the cost of feeding and accommodation for their children in senior high schools. This proposal comes amidst concerns about the sustainability of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.

In an interview with Accra-based Okay FM, Mr. Carbonu emphasized that while the Free SHS policy has undeniable benefits, the current economic climate makes it challenging to maintain. He proposed that parents should be responsible for feeding and accommodation costs, while the government focuses on providing tuition.

This suggestion echoes a similar proposal by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), which urged parents to assist with feeding challenges in senior high schools. Mr. Carbonu criticized the government’s reliance on the National Food Buffer Stock Company, citing delays in food supplies to schools.

To address these challenges, Mr. Carbonu suggested temporarily closing schools to allow stakeholders to discuss solutions. He emphasized the need for a Minister of Education to lead these deliberations.

Ghana’s financial constraints were also highlighted, with Mr. Carbonu describing the country as “debt-ridden and distressed.” He noted that taxes are largely consumed by salaries, interest payments, and statutory obligations, leaving limited resources for additional spending.

Mr. Carbonu reiterated NAGRAT’s proposal for targeted support, suggesting that the government identify financially distressed families and offer bursaries to support them. This approach, he argued, would allow for more efficient use of resources.

Finally, Mr. Carbonu called for a national economic dialogue to involve stakeholders in crafting practical solutions to the current crisis. He emphasized the importance of transparency about the country’s financial challenges.
