COHBS urges Ministry of Education, GES to address lack of textbooks

The Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS) in the Volta Region has convened a press conference in Ho, where its Chairman, Mr. Vincent Stephen Gordor Stephen, articulated a comprehensive array of pressing concerns besetting public basic schools in the region.
These grievances, which have far-reaching implications for the quality of education, necessitate immediate attention and redress from the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES).
A paramount concern pertains to the acute shortage of textbooks tailored to the Standard-Based and Common Core Curriculum. Regrettably, textbooks are currently available for only four subjects – Mathematics, English, Science, and Creative Arts – spanning Kindergarten to Basic 8.
This glaring deficiency has significantly compromised the efficacy of teaching and learning in public schools, precipitating a crisis that warrants swift and decisive intervention.
Furthermore, the inconsistent and inadequate disbursement of Capitation Grants has severely hindered the smooth operation of basic schools. This fiscal uncertainty has imposed undue hardship on school administrators, who struggle to provide essential services and resources to their students.
In addition, the dearth of furniture in schools has created an environment conducive to discomfort and distraction, rather than learning and academic achievement. Many students are compelled to sit on broken chairs, benches, or even the floor, which is unacceptable and requires immediate rectification.
Another issue of grave concern is the escalating trend of indiscipline in schools, manifesting as vandalism, bullying, and general misconduct. This phenomenon poses a significant threat to the nation’s future leadership and necessitates a multi-stakeholder approach to address its root causes and mitigate its effects.
In light of these pressing concerns, COHBS has urged the government, corporate organizations, and philanthropic individuals to provide the necessary support to alleviate these challenges.
It is imperative that the Ministry of Education and the GES take decisive action to address these long-standing issues, which have been neglected by successive governments, and prioritize the improvement of education in the Volta Region.
