WAEC Cites Personnel Scarcity as Reason for Delay in Marking 2024 BECE
Exam Body Faces Temporary Setback in Marking Process

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has finally shed light on the delayed marking of the 2024 Basic Examination Certificate Examination (BECE), putting to rest speculation and concerns from various stakeholders. According to WAEC, the delay is not due to financial constraints, as previously suggested by the Minority in Parliament, but rather a result of a scheduling conflict.
The same personnel responsible for marking the BECE are currently engaged in invigilating the ongoing West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE). This overlap has necessitated a temporary shift in priorities, as the same staff members are required to oversee both examinations. WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John, clarified that the government has made financial commitments to address any outstanding financial obligations, dispelling claims of indebtedness as the cause of the delay.
This explanation brings much-needed clarity to the situation, and stakeholders can now rest assured that the delay is not a result of financial mismanagement, but rather a logistical challenge that will be addressed in due course.
