The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has issued a stern warning regarding the alarming increase in violent clashes among senior high school students.
This warning comes on the heels of a series of disturbing incidents, where students have engaged in physical altercations, with some wielding dangerous weapons, including cutlasses and locally manufactured pistols.
These violent encounters have sparked renewed concerns about indiscipline and character formation within educational institutions. Speaking to Citi News, GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Tanko Musah, expressed grave concern over the deteriorating state of discipline among students.
Musah attributed this growing indiscipline to a broader national decline in respect and accountability. He criticized the lack of stringent measures against students involved in violent and criminal acts, stressing that failure to address the situation could result in even greater chaos within the educational sector.
“If care is not taken in the coming days, like I have said, we may have to establish military barracks on our campuses, so that they will help to maintain law and order,” Musah warned. He further suggested that deploying soldiers might become necessary, as students increasingly resort to using weapons.
“We may need to employ more military men, since the students are now coming with weapons… When the students pull out their weapons, the soldiers will also pull theirs, then they will square it up there,” Musah remarked.
The GNAT leader’s comments have sparked debate about the state of discipline in Ghanaian schools and the broader implications for national security and education. Stakeholders in education are now being urged to take urgent steps to address the root causes of this growing unrest, including fostering a culture of respect and accountability among students.
The call by GNAT underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to safeguard educational institutions and maintain an environment conducive to learning and character development.
In a related development, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has limited corporal punishment to headteachers, in an effort to curb student abuse. According to the Deputy PRO of the National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTA), this move aims to prevent the mistreatment of students.
