The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has called on the government to pay all outstanding funds owed to senior high schools across the country to ensure the smooth reopening of schools in January.

In a press release issued on Friday, December 21, CHASS emphasized that the delayed disbursement of funds poses significant challenges to the effective running of schools. While acknowledging recent efforts by the government to release some funds, the statement noted that these payments have been insufficient in addressing critical financial needs.

β€œWhile we acknowledge some recent disbursements of funds to schools, we regret to inform you that this release has not fully resolved the critical financial needs of our institutions,” CHASS stated.

The association highlighted several key areas where funds are still owed, including arrears for perishable goods, allocations for day and single-track schools, transportation costs for food distribution, utility bills, and recurrent operational expenses.

According to CHASS, the lack of these funds has become a β€œserious threat to the smooth operation of schools.” They urged the government to act swiftly to settle all outstanding bills, stressing the importance of these resources for the successful reopening of schools in January.

β€œThese funds are critical for the successful reopening of schools in January,” the statement read. β€œWithout these resources, school heads will face insurmountable challenges in managing daily operations.”

The statement further warned of the negative implications for students’ well-being and the overall management of secondary institutions if the government fails to address the issue promptly.

In a final appeal, CHASS cautioned that failure to disburse the funds would leave them with no choice but to take drastic measures. β€œWe will advise against the resumption of the academic calendar,” they declared, β€œshould the government fail to disburse the funds.”

The heads of schools have made it clear that the situation demands urgent attention to avoid disruptions to the academic calendar and ensure that schools can function effectively in the new year.
