More than thirty students from Sawla Senior High School in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region have been suspended indefinitely for violating the Ghana Education Service (GES) policy banning mobile phones on school premises. Among those suspended, a significant number are girls accused of bringing mobile phones to school, which directly contravenes GES regulations.

Sources within the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Directorate of GES also suggest that the students were involved in other immoral activities at school, though the specifics of these allegations have not been fully disclosed.

A seven-member committee formed by the school management to investigate the matter found all the students guilty of the charges, leading to their indefinite suspension. This decision has sparked backlash from several parents, who claim they were not officially notified about the suspensions.

One parent voiced frustration, stating, “If I entrusted my child to your care, why should I be asked to send her away without being informed about the students involved? What kind of management is this?” This sentiment echoes growing concern among parents who feel left out of the decision-making process.

Another parent, Ferida Issahaku, expressed similar dissatisfaction, saying, “I only heard about the suspension from a friend. I should have been notified and perhaps gone to collect her. As of now, she hasn’t returned, and we don’t know her whereabouts.” This highlights the breakdown in communication between the school and parents.

Sawla Senior High School has previously been in the news for issues involving inappropriate tutor-student relationships, resulting in the dismissal and suspension of staff members. Despite efforts to address these concerns, the school remains at the center of controversy.

The school has also faced criticism over its academic performance. In the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Sawla SHS recorded the lowest performance in the country, with the Savannah Region ranked last nationwide. This has fueled concerns about the overall management of the school.

As the suspension matter continues to unfold, parents are demanding greater transparency and better communication from the school, stressing the need for involvement in decisions that impact their children’s education and well-being.
