GOVERNMENT PRESENTS GHc1 MILLION TO KANTAMANTO MARKET FIRE VICTIMS

In a gesture of solidarity and support, the Government of Ghana has donated GHc1 million to aid victims of the devastating fire that ravaged the Kantamanto Market in Accra on January 2, 2025. The donation was presented by the Chief of Staff, Hon. Julius Debrah, on behalf of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama.
The President’s commitment to supporting the affected traders and shop owners was reaffirmed during a courtesy call by the Kantamanto Traders Association, comprising 13 different groups, in the aftermath of the disaster. The Government’s prompt response demonstrates its dedication to alleviating the suffering of those impacted by the fire.
The Kantamanto Market fire resulted in the destruction of over 7,000 shops, with estimated losses totaling millions of cedis and $1.7 million worth of merchandise. The Government has expressed its deepest sympathies to the victims and emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to rebuild and redesign the market, ensuring the prevention of similar disasters in the future.
In his remarks, Hon. Julius Debrah noted that the President is committed to finding solutions to the challenges faced by the traders and shop owners. He stated, “There is hope. The President was elected to solve problems, and he is ready to help, devoid of politics.”
The Chairman of the Kantamanto Traders Association, Rev. Opoku Afreh, expressed his gratitude to the President and the Government for the donation. He revealed that the association has negotiated a deal with ACCESS Bank for a $100 million loan to construct a modern market. However, he appealed to the Government to intervene in a dispute over the affected land, which is hindering the reconstruction process.
The donation ceremony was attended by the two Deputy Chiefs of Staff, Mr. Stanislav Dogbe and Ms. Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, as well as the Legal Advisor to the President, Mrs. Marietta Brew Oppong, and other Presidential Staffers.
The Government’s GHc1 million donation serves as a testament to its commitment to supporting vulnerable citizens and promoting economic growth. As the traders and shop owners embark on the journey of rebuilding and recovery, the Government’s assistance will undoubtedly play a vital role in alleviating their suffering and restoring their livelihoods.
