The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing a 20% allowance to teachers who accept postings to rural areas. This policy aims to enhance the welfare of educators working in underserved communities.

In addition to the allowance, the minister announced plans to provide accommodation for teachers in rural areas. Discussions are ongoing with the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development to realign fiscal policies and allocate resources from the Common Fund.

At the Teacher Prize Sponsors’ Appreciation Breakfast Meeting, 12 teachers were rewarded for their hard work and dedication. The Most Outstanding Teacher Award went to Fuseina Fuseini of Madina SDA Basic 1 School; Richard Kojo Adomako of Uaddara Basic School was the first runner-up, while Diana-E Rose of Aburi Girls’ SHS came up as the second runner-up.

The minister emphasized the need for additional funding to improve the education sector and proposed a resource allocation formula. He expressed hope that the Minister of Finance would succeed in engaging the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to uncap the education fund and enable the government to secure more resources.

Mr. Iddrisu outlined a proposed resource allocation formula, with 40% of education funding allocated to teacher education, 20-25% to Free Senior High School, and the remaining portion to basic education.

The minister also stressed the importance of empathy, patience, and strong communication skills in teaching. He urged educators to adopt these skills to create a positive learning atmosphere for students.

Mr. Iddrisu further emphasized the need for universities to review their programs to align with national manpower demands and prioritize science, engineering, and mathematics education.

The minister commended the sponsors of the Teachers Award for their role in motivating and supporting teachers across the country.
