The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has defended the delay in releasing the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, citing ongoing investigations into alleged malpractice.

According to John Kapi, Head of Public Relations at WAEC, the delay is necessary to ensure a thorough and fair process, upholding the integrity of the examinations.

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has issued a one-week ultimatum, demanding the release of all withheld results or face nationwide protests. NUGS has also called for the removal of WAEC Ghana’s Head, alleging unfair treatment of candidates accused of malpractice.

WAEC remains committed to a credible examination process, stressing that only deserving candidates will receive their grades. As stated by Mr. Kapi, “We need to sit down and probably bring on board a number of stakeholders to decide on this issue so that we are awarding grades to people who deserve them.”

However, this explanation has done little to appease NUGS and other stakeholders, who argue that the prolonged delay is causing undue stress and uncertainty for affected students.

NUGS has vowed to mobilize students across the country for protests if WAEC fails to meet its demands within the one-week deadline.
