A tragic incident occurred on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at the Sekondi office of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), resulting in the death of a WAEC official, Mr. Joseph Agyemang, popularly known as Papa Bruno.

According to eyewitnesses, the altercation began when frustrated parents and students, who had been invited by WAEC for investigation, confronted the Council’s officials over withheld WASSCE results. Rev. Father Canon Wryter, a parent and witness to the incident, provided a detailed account of the events leading up to the tragedy.

“We were invited to go to the WAEC office with our affected children to answer some questions on the withheld results,” Rev. Father Canon Wryter explained. “I was given a chair in their office because of my position as a Rev. Father, but all other parents had no place to sit and looked stranded.”

The situation escalated when WAEC officials asked affected students to come into a designated room for questioning without their parents. This led to tempers flaring, and in the midst of the exchanges, Agyemang collapsed while trying to address the parents.

Rev. Father Canon Wryter described the moments following the collapse: “Since I was closer to him, he fell on me, and his situation got worse. He was quickly rushed to the Essikado Hospital but died shortly after.”

The incident has sparked concerns among parents and students, who are urging WAEC to resolve the issue of withheld results promptly. With most universities having closed admissions, affected students are facing uncertainty about their future.

Rev. Father Canon Wryter appealed to WAEC to take immediate action: “We are pleading with the government and WAEC to resolve the issue as soon as possible. The universities have closed admissions, and we do not know what is happening to our children.”

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of effective communication and conflict resolution in situations involving high stakes and emotional investment.
