WAEC Appeals for Government Support to Release 2024 WASSCE Results
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), a non-profit organization responsible for conducting the WASSCE, has called on the government to settle its outstanding debt. This funding is crucial to completing post-examination processes and releasing the 2024 results.
Government Payments and Outstanding Debt
John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, revealed that the government has paid GH¢75,976,815.50 of the GH¢186,437,617.50 owed. However, the remaining debt has created significant challenges for the council.

The delay in funding has led to several issues:
- Unpaid Examiners: Examiners may withhold marked scripts due to uncertainty about when they’ll be paid.
- Rising Costs: WAEC struggles to buy materials in bulk, increasing operational costs.
- Exchange Rate Risks: The inability to procure items early exposes WAEC to currency fluctuations.
- Delayed Payments: Invigilators, supervisors, and suppliers face payment delays.
- Outdated Equipment: Limited resources hinder the replacement of old machinery.
These challenges also affect WAEC’s ability to combat examination malpractice and introduce innovations to maintain the integrity of the exams.
Funding and the Free SHS Program
WAEC relies on fees paid by candidates to cover expenses like printing exam papers, marking scripts, and paying invigilators. However, under the Free SHS policy, the government absorbs these fees, often leading to delays in fund disbursement.
“Over the years, these delays have strained our operations,” Mr. Kapi said. “The lack of a fixed timetable for fund releases has made conducting exams, which was once smooth, increasingly difficult. This inconsistency is hurting WAEC’s reputation.”
WAEC is urging the government to expedite payments to ensure a smooth process for releasing the 2024 WASSCE results and maintaining the academic calendar for universities.
