WAEC Announces 460,611 Candidates for This Yearβs WASSCE
Examination Begins with Enhanced Security Measures and Increased Candidate Participation

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has initiated the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, beginning with practical and theory papers on Monday, August 19, 2024. This follows the Visual Art Project work conducted from August 5 to 16, 2024. The examination is set to conclude on Friday, September 20, 2024.
A total of 460,611 candidates, including 212,954 males and 247,657 females from 1,003 schools, have registered for this yearβs examination. This represents a 2.66% increase from the 2023 figure of 448,674. The examination is being held across 1,000 centres nationwide.
WAEC has assured all stakeholders and the public that comprehensive security measures are in place to ensure the examinationβs integrity. However, the Council has raised concerns about attempts to undermine the examination process. Reports indicate:
1. Candidates in some areas are being charged between GHβ΅200.00 and GHβ΅500.00 for assistance from invigilators.
2. Supervisors at certain centres are allegedly assigning teachers to invigilate their own subjects.
3. Some schools have registered individuals who are not their legitimate students.
WAEC has warned Heads of Schools, Supervisors, and Invigilators to avoid these practices, stating that those found in violation will face severe consequences. The results of implicated candidates will be cancelled, and examination centres that breach the rules will be reassigned to WAEC-designated centres.
The Council calls on all stakeholders, particularly supervisors and invigilators, to uphold the examinationβs integrity. Candidates are also advised to adhere strictly to examination regulations and avoid engaging with rogue websites offering fraudulent assistance.
WAEC extends its best wishes to all candidates, reinforcing that success can be achieved through honest effort.
