The Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UPNMG) is calling for calm among newly posted nurses and midwives following a directive from the Acting Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) revoking all appointments and recruitments made after December 7, 2024. This decision has created uncertainty among the affected professionals, particularly those who received financial clearance in June 2024 but have yet to be added to the government payroll.

β€œWe acknowledge the distress this development has caused among our junior colleagues and the wider nursing and midwifery community. However, we wish to assure all newly posted nurses and midwives that we are actively engaging relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service, to clarify the implications of this directive and advocate for the best possible resolution,” UPNMG stated in an official release.

Concerns are mounting regarding job security and the broader impact on the healthcare sector. Health professionals fear that nullifying these appointments could exacerbate staffing shortages in hospitals and clinics, placing additional strain on Ghana’s already burdened healthcare system.

UPNMG has urged all affected personnel to remain patient as discussions continue. The union remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of nurses and midwives and will provide timely updates as the situation unfolds.
