TTAG Engages Minister of Education on CETAG’s Strike, Student Allowances, Infrastructure Deficits, and Upgrade of Colleges of Education

The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG), under the leadership of H.E. Soale Razak, has engaged with the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, regarding the ongoing industrial strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association (CETAG) and its impact on teacher trainees nationwide.
Minister’s Promise
Dr. Adutwum assured TTAG that he has scheduled a meeting with CETAG leadership on July 5th, 2024, to discuss their demands and find a swift resolution to the strike, aiming to resume academic activities in colleges of education promptly. He emphasized his commitment to meeting CETAG’s demands if they demonstrate good faith and cooperate with the government.
Upgrade of Colleges to Universities
The discussion also addressed the potential upgrading of some colleges of education into fully fledged universities, a proposal endorsed by the Minister. Dr. Adutwum acknowledged the necessity for such a system akin to mentoring universities and confirmed its feasibility under GTEC’s guidance. He pledged to implement this initiative expeditiously.
Student Allowances
TTAG raised concerns about student allowances and infrastructure deficiencies in colleges. The Minister reassured the association that initial allowances would be disbursed to students within the coming days. He also recognized the need for an increase in allowances and committed to discussing TTAG’s proposal for a GH₵800.00 allowance with relevant stakeholders.
Infrastructure Deficits
Regarding infrastructure, Dr. Adutwum acknowledged the poor condition of buses and pledged to invest in acquiring new buses to enhance transportation services. He confirmed the termination of previous contracts for abandoned and incomplete infrastructure projects and pledged to swiftly award new contracts for their completion.
Student Exchange Programs
TTAG proposed exporting teachers to other countries to alleviate teacher employment pressures in Ghana. The Minister welcomed the idea and promised to consider it as part of his broader vision to transform the education sector, focusing particularly on enhancing Colleges of Education.
TTAG Calls for Cooperation and Commitment
TTAG leadership expressed their commitment to closely monitor the situation, following up on the promised meeting with CETAG. They urged CETAG leadership to consider meeting with the Minister to resolve the impasse. TTAG vowed to actively engage with the Minister and other stakeholders to ensure the swift implementation of proposed solutions, advocating for the welfare of teacher trainees and the improvement of teacher training institutions.
This engagement highlights ongoing efforts to address the challenges facing teacher education and underscores commitments to enhance educational infrastructure, student welfare, and professional development opportunities for future educators in Ghana.
