According to the Global Peace Index (GPI)βwhich evaluates peace based on 23 key indicatorsβthe world is becoming increasingly unstable. The number of active conflicts has reached 56, the highest since World War II. Moreover, 92 countries are now involved in conflicts beyond their borders, complicating peace negotiations and intensifying human suffering.
Although global militarization had been steadily declining for 16 years, this trend reversed in 2024, with 108 countries increasing their military capacities. As a result, the threat of large-scale warfare is now greater than at any point since the GPI began monitoring global peace.
In 2025, the global state of peace declined by 0.56%, marking the 12th deterioration in the last 16 years. During this period, 97 countries experienced worsening peace levels, while only 65 saw improvements. The disparity between the most and least peaceful nations has never been more pronounced. While the 25 most peaceful countries have shown modest improvements since 2008, the 25 least peaceful have grown significantly more unstable.
Yet, amidst these challenges, some nations continue to exemplify peace and stability. Iceland remains the most peaceful country globallyβa position it has held consistently since 2008.
