On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, hundreds of members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) took to the streets of Accra to protest the government’s failure to pay their 13-month arrears under the Tier 2 pension scheme.

The demonstration, dubbed the Teachers Condition Demo, commenced at Obra Spot in Nkrumah Circle and concluded at Independence Square. Protesters carried placards and chanted slogans, seeking to highlight their grievances.

The demonstrators urged the government to prioritize their pension payments, which they claim have been unjustly delayed for far too long.

During the protest, Peter Boateng, the Greater Accra Regional Secretary of GNAT, voiced the growing frustration among teachers regarding the government’s inaction. He called for urgent intervention from the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service (GES), and the government to address the issue.

“Our members have shown remarkable patience, but this delay in releasing our pension arrears is simply unacceptable. We are here to remind the government of its responsibilities,” Mr. Boateng emphasized, urging authorities to take swift action to prevent further escalation of the situation.
