Teacher Union Threatens Strike Action Over Maltreatment of TVET Teachers
The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has issued an ultimatum to the Ministry of Education, demanding resolution of challenges faced by professional teachers within the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector by September 30, 2024, or face strike action.
The union’s concerns include the lack of consultation with teacher representatives during the development of the TVET scheme of service and the forced migration of teachers from the Ghana Education Service to TVET without their consent.
In a statement, NAGRAT criticized the Ministry of Education for failing to provide a transitional period allowing teachers to choose whether to remain with the Ghana Education Service or transfer to TVET. The union also expressed concern over the development of a scheme of service for TVET teachers without discussions with teacher representatives.
NAGRAT President, Erie Agbe-Carbonu, emphasized that the union will embark on industrial action if the Ministry fails to address these challenges by the specified deadline. The union demands a transition timetable and the option for teachers to choose their preferred service.
The issues at hand include:
– Lack of consultation with teacher representatives during the development of the TVET scheme of service
– Forced migration of teachers from the Ghana Education Service to TVET without their consent
– Failure to provide a transitional period for teachers to choose their preferred service
– Development of a scheme of service for TVET teachers without discussions with teacher representatives
NAGRAT’s demands include:
– Resolution of challenges faced by TVET teachers by September 30, 2024
– Transition timetable for teachers to choose their preferred service
– Option for teachers to opt for which service they want to belong to
If these demands are not met, the union will embark on industrial action in solidarity with its members working with TVET.
