The Ghana Education Service (GES), in partnership with the National Teaching Council (NTC), has announced the renewal and issuance of new teacher licenses for professional educators nationwide.

This move is in line with the NTC’s mandate under Section 60(d) of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 (Act 1023), which requires the registration and licensing of qualified teachers.

Background

The teacher licensing process began in 2021, with licenses initially issued for a three-year period. As these licenses are now nearing expiration, the NTC is set to begin the renewal process on Monday, November 25, 2024, starting in the Greater Accra Region. A full national schedule will be released soon.

Key Updates on the Teacher Licensing Process

Teachers are urged to note the following important updates and requirements:

Redesigned License Cards

The new license cards come with an updated design, which includes additional details like subject specialism and teacher category. All teachers will receive these updated cards, even if their current licenses have expired.

QR Code Verification

The new cards feature a QR code for easy verification of a teacher’s registration status. Scanning the QR code will show whether a teacher is in good standing or if their registration has expired.

Conditions for Renewal

Teachers with expired licenses must meet all renewal conditions, including earning the required Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points.

Professional Development

Teachers are encouraged to actively participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLC) and CPD programs to ensure they meet the necessary requirements for license renewal.

Registration and License Validity

The validity of teacher license cards will now be extended to five years. However, annual registration remains a fundamental requirement for maintaining professional status and will expire on December 31 each year. Please note that renewing your license does not automatically renew your registration.

Steps for Teachers

To ensure a smooth renewal process, teachers must:

  1. Update Their Profiles
Visit the NTC portal at www.tpg.ntc.gov.gh to update their profiles. A detailed guide is available at https://ntc.gov.gh/licence-update/.
  2. Meet CPD Requirements
Actively engage in CPD programs to accumulate the required points for annual registration renewal.

Implementation and Compliance

GES Management has instructed all Regional Directors to share this information with teachers through Metro, Municipal, and District Education Offices to ensure full compliance.

Importance of Registration and Licensing

The professional status of every teacher depends on having both valid registration and licensing. Teachers are urged to take this process seriously as it reflects their professional identity and commitment to national education standards.

For more information or inquiries, teachers can contact their respective Regional or District Education Offices or visit the NTC portal.

This initiative demonstrates GES and NTC’s continued commitment to upholding high standards in Ghana’s teaching profession.
