Minister of Education Calls for Collective Action to Improve Education

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, is urging stakeholders to support the government in breaking down barriers to education, particularly for marginalized groups such as girls, children, and persons with disabilities.
He emphasized the need for collective action to address systemic barriers and ensure that no one is left behind. Iddrisu highlighted the transformative power of education and Ghana’s commitment to making education accessible to all, as stipulated in the Convention on the Rights of the Child adopted in 1989.
He also linked education to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing that education is essential for achieving all 17 SDGs.
The Minister’s call to action is timely, as Ghana’s education sector faces challenges such as overcrowded classrooms, inadequate infrastructure, and strained resources due to the expansion of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.
To address these challenges, Iddrisu stressed the need for strong partnerships between the government, private sector, international organizations, and communities.
Some key areas that require attention include expanding access to quality education, ensuring that all Ghanaians have access to quality education regardless of their background or socioeconomic status. Additionally, improving teacher welfare is crucial, providing teachers with the necessary support and resources to deliver high-quality education.
Overhauling the curriculum is also essential, ensuring that it is relevant, inclusive, and prepares students for the challenges of the 21st century. Finally, addressing systemic barriers is vital, identifying and addressing systemic barriers that prevent marginalized groups from accessing quality education.
By working together, stakeholders can help ensure that all Ghanaians have access to quality education and can reach their full potential.
