President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Haruna Iddrisu, a veteran politician and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, as the new Minister of Education. The appointment, announced on January 16, 2025, acknowledges Iddrisu’s wealth of experience and leadership expertise.

As Education Minister, Iddrisu will address the sector’s pressing challenges, particularly the effective implementation of the Free SHS policy. His focus will be on enhancing access to quality education, improving teacher welfare, and reforming the curriculum.

Furthermore, he will oversee the rollout of free tuition for first-year university students and other initiatives aimed at transforming Ghana’s education landscape.

Iddrisu’s impressive background makes him an ideal candidate for this position. A lawyer and politician, he has owned and managed football clubs, including Karela United and Steadfast FC. His tenure as Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament from 2017 has equipped him with the skills to drive legislative changes and promote inclusive growth.

Iddrisu’s nomination is subject to parliamentary approval. His appointment underscores President Mahama’s commitment to assigning seasoned leaders to strategic portfolios, ensuring the effective delivery of campaign promises.

This move follows other significant appointments, including Kwame Governs Agbodza as Minister of Roads and Highways and Agnes Naa Momo Lartey as Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
