New Teacher Union Strike Announced for August 9: Hereβs Why
Union leaders cite unresolved contract disputes and inadequate funding as primary motivations for the upcoming strike.

Three teacher unions have declared their intent to commence a strike on August 9 due to the non-payment of dues. These unions demand that the Finance Ministry fulfill its obligation to pay their members, warning that a failure to authorize these payments by August 8 will result in a nationwide strike. The unions involved are the Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Federation of Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC). They have expressed their frustration with the Finance Ministry’s delay in issuing the necessary authorization for payment.
The allowances in dispute include the Vehicle Maintenance Allowance (VMA) and other entitlements due to the members of these unions. In a statement issued on Monday, August 5, the unions set an ultimatum for the government, insisting that the allowances be disbursed by August 8. Should this deadline not be met, they will initiate the strike the following day.
The unions accuse the government of employing tactics to withhold their rightful payments and emphasize that their patience has been exhausted. They are prepared to take all necessary steps to ensure their demands are met.
Reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding their members’ rights and welfare, the unions called on the government to act swiftly to avert disruption. They urged the Ministry of Finance to honor its commitments to prevent the impending strike.
The unions have given the government until the close of business on Thursday, August 8, to issue the authorization letter. If the Ministry fails to comply, the SSA-UoG, FUSSAG, and TEWU (TUC) will commence industrial action on August 9, 2024. They remain resolute in their commitment to upholding their members’ rights and will persist until justice is achieved. The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has intervened by writing to the Ministry of Finance to expedite payment, stating, βWe have repeatedly attempted to engage the Ministry to release a letter authorizing payment, but the Ministry has refused.β
