Negotiations Underway Between Government and TEWU
Talks Aim to Resolve Long-Standing Grievances Between Government and TEWU

The government of Ghana has commenced negotiations with the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) to address the union’s concerns regarding their conditions of service.
The negotiation process was initiated after the parties signed the rules of engagement. The government team, led by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), comprised representatives from the FWSC and the management of the Ghana Education Service (GES). TEWU was represented by its union executives.
Prior to the signing of the rules of engagement, the Director of Grievance and Negotiation at FWSC, Charles Adabo Oppong, commended TEWU for calling off its strike and returning to the negotiation table. He expressed hope that the negotiations would be peaceful and yield a successful outcome.
The Director-General of GES, Eric Nkansah, also commended the executives of TEWU for their support and patience throughout the negotiation process. He further thanked the FWSC for their efforts in obtaining mandates for negotiations, even in an election year.
TEWU’s General Secretary, King James Azortibah, emphasized the need for expeditious negotiations, stating that the union was prepared to negotiate in good faith and secure a favorable deal for its members.
The National Chairman of TEWU, Salamatu M. Braimah, highlighted the frustration experienced by the union’s members and cautioned that any further delays might exacerbate their plight.
The National Labour Commission (NLC) had previously directed TEWU to call off its indefinite nationwide strike action, which commenced on November 18, 2024. The strike was a response to the government’s failure to address the union’s longstanding concerns regarding their conditions of service.
TEWU-TUC expressed frustration over the delays in concluding, signing, and implementing revised conditions of service for workers under the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Library Authority, the Museums and Monuments Board, as well as Public Technical and Traditional Universities.
