President John Dramani Mahama’s plans and strategies to eliminate the controversial double-track system have sparked excitement among parents. This enthusiasm stems from various factors, particularly Mahama’s commitment to fulfilling his campaign promise. Many parents believe his decision to end the system vindicates his stance on education.

The abolition of the double-track system means that all SHS1, SHS2, and SHS3 students will attend school simultaneously and vacate together, eliminating the confusion caused by the previous academic calendar. Parents have long struggled with the challenges associated with the system, and its removal is seen as a significant relief.

This decision follows the official inauguration of a high-powered committee by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, tasked with overseeing a smooth transition from the double-track system to a single-track model. The committee was inaugurated on February 27, 2025, with the support of Deputy Minister Dr. Clement Apaak.

The announcement of this policy shift was met with widespread jubilation among parents. “We knew President Mahama would honor his promises, but we never expected the double-track system to end this quickly,” an elated parent shared in an interview with Ghana Education News Portal. “Ghana’s secondary education will now return to normalcy,” added Madam Theresa from Teshie.

Many parents believe that ending the double-track system will reduce challenges such as teenage pregnancies, which were exacerbated by students spending extended periods at home. “The system was a major concern, but we had little choice since it was the government’s decision at the time,” one parent explained. “We thank the President and the Minister for this bold step within their first 120 days in office.”

President Mahama’s initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to improve the education system and create a more efficient academic schedule for students. The 11-member committee is expected to oversee the logistics and implementation of the new single-track system, addressing potential challenges and ensuring a smooth transition.

The committee will also provide recommendations to facilitate the change, ensuring that all stakeholders are adequately prepared. It will be chaired by Prof. Peter Grant, a distinguished academic from the University of Cape Coast (UCC). His leadership is seen as crucial to reversing the double-track system and establishing a more streamlined educational model for Senior High Schools and Technical Schools across the country.
