Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has reaffirmed his commitment to passing the LGBTQ+ bill, which was previously passed by Parliament but not signed into law by former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

During a recent address to the Ghanaian community in CΓ΄te d’Ivoire, Speaker Bagbin emphasized his strong opposition to same-sex relationships, stating that he would rather sacrifice his life than accept such practices.

Bagbin highlighted the constitutional framework, noting that the president does not have the authority to withhold assent to a bill passed by Parliament. “Parliament is the authority on passing laws, not any other person, not the president,” he stated.

The Speaker expressed his determination to engage the new Attorney General and Minister for Justice to review the bill and prepare it for submission to the new president for assent. “I’m determined to see this through quickly, hoping for passage this year,” Bagbin said.

Bagbin’s remarks come at a time when the debate over LGBTQ+ rights continues to generate intense discussions both locally and globally. His comments reflect the gravity of the issue in Ghana’s legislative and social discourse.

In related news, President Mahama has established a 7-member committee to plan the National Economic Dialogue, fulfilling his commitment under his 120-day Social Contract with Ghanaians.
