Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has called on the University of Ghana to reduce residential facility fees by 25% for both new and returning students.

This request was made during a meeting held on February 6, 2025, with the University’s management, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfo, and the Student Representative Council (SRC) at the Ministry’s office in Accra.

“I have urged the Vice Chancellor to cut the residential facility fees by 25%, and I’ve also asked her to involve the SRC in future discussions regarding any fee changes,” said Minister Iddrisu.

In response, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfo assured the Minister that the University would comply with the directive.

“We have heard the concerns of both you, our Minister, and our students, and we are able to make the 25% reduction across the board. Going forward, there will be proper engagement with students,” she said.

SRC President Maradona Adjei Yeboah expressed gratitude for the fee reduction but called for refunds for students who had already paid the higher fees.

“We appreciate the reduction, as it will ease the financial burden on our parents. However, there should be refunds for those who have already made payments,” he said.

University management revealed that approximately 80% of students had already paid their residential facility fees.
