Govt to begin distribution of food items to schools after evacuation of food stock from warehouses

A government delegation, led by Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, and Akatsi North MP, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, has embarked on a tour of food warehouses in Tema. The purpose of the tour is to facilitate the evacuation and distribution of food items to various schools.
This initiative follows President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to the Chief of Staff and the Ghana Education Service to evacuate food items held in warehouses for onward distribution to schools experiencing food shortages.
According to Dr. Apaak, the distribution of food items to schools will commence immediately after the evacuation is completed. He assured Ghanaians that the government is committed to ensuring that all public secondary schools receive the necessary food items.
The delegation disclosed that over 900 schools will benefit from the distribution, with the National Buffer Stock Company ceasing to distribute food items to schools henceforth. Instead, the Ministry of Finance will release funds to heads of schools to directly procure food items from suppliers.
Dr. Apaak emphasized that this new arrangement will not only ensure that students consume wholesome and nutritious food but also remove the middleman role played by the Buffer Stock and food suppliers. This will enable heads of institutions to take direct charge of procuring and supplying food to students.
