The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a directive instructing all Colleges of Education nationwide to remain operational while awaiting a final resolution regarding the ongoing strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG).

CETAG initiated a nationwide strike on June 14, citing the government’s failure to implement agreed-upon arbitral awards and address other conditions of service for its members.

In response to increasing calls for the closure of Colleges of Education due to the strike, GTEC has clarified that no such decision has been made. In an official statement, GTEC emphasized, β€œAs of today, August 16, 2024, the Commission has not concluded on any such matter, nor has it been directed by the Honourable Minister of Education to take such action. Consequently, all 46 Colleges of Education are to remain open until further notice.”

**UPDATE ON CETAG STRIKE AND POTENTIAL CLOSURE OF COLLEGES OF EDUCATION**

GTEC has been made aware of numerous requests regarding the potential closure of the 46 Colleges of Education due to the ongoing strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers’ Association of Ghana (CETAG).

As of August 16, 2024, the Commission has not reached a decision on this matter, nor has it received any directive from the Honourable Minister of Education to proceed with such an action. Therefore, all 46 Colleges of Education are instructed to remain open until further notice.

Additionally, the Commission has successfully migrated 20 institutions to date and is on track to complete the migration of all 46 Colleges by the end of the month.

Furthermore, the top-up of research allowances has been disbursed to 44 Colleges of Education, with the exceptions of McCoy and Dambai Colleges, which are facing technical issues that are being addressed. The payment of the all-year-round allowance, another contentious issue, has been initiated through the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS). This will enable the Ministry of Finance to issue the necessary release letter and specific warrant to facilitate payment as soon as possible.

Regarding the payment of August salaries, GTEC will provide further instructions once guidance has been received from the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

In the meantime, the Commission is in active discussions with the Honourable Minister of Education to secure financial clearance for the recruitment of 2,500 teaching staff. This recruitment aims to bolster the current workforce and ensure the resumption of academic activities while efforts continue to address CETAG’s concerns.

GTEC will promptly communicate the modalities for this expedited recruitment process once clearance has been granted.

Your usual cooperation is anticipated and appreciated.
