GNAT Takes to the Streets: Demanding Fair Treatment and Timely Pension Payments
Over 10,000 teachers affected by pension payment delays

Ghana’s education sector is facing a crisis as hundreds of teachers took to the streets of Accra to demand justice for delayed pension payments. The protest, organized by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), highlighted the government’s failure to pay 13 months’ worth of arrears under the Tier 2 pension scheme.
Over 1,000 GNAT members participated in the march, holding placards and chanting slogans to draw attention to their plight. The demonstration began at Obra Spot in Nkrumah Circle and culminated at Independence Square. Teachers expressed frustration and disappointment with the government’s inaction, emphasizing that delayed pension payments have caused undue hardship for retired educators.
The GNAT is calling for immediate payment of the outstanding arrears, prioritization of pension payments, and resolution of ongoing issues affecting teachers’ service conditions. This protest serves as a stark reminder of the government’s responsibility to safeguard the welfare of educators who have dedicated their lives to shaping Ghana’s future.
GNAT’s Greater Accra Regional Secretary, Peter Boateng, expressed teachers’ growing frustration over the government’s inaction on their pension arrears during a recent protest. “Our members have shown patience, but this delay is unacceptable,” he emphasized, urging swift intervention from the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service (GES), and the government.
Mr. Boateng stressed that the protest aimed to remind authorities of their responsibility to resolve the issue. “We are out here to demand what is rightfully ours,” he said, warning that further escalation would occur if the government fails to act.
The protest highlighted the plight of teachers affected by delayed pension arrears, non-implementation of allowances, disparities in the Single Spine Pay Policy, challenges with salary reactivation, and inadequate amenities in rural schools.
GNAT demands urgent action to address these pressing concerns, ensuring teachers receive fair treatment and improved working conditions. The government’s prompt response is crucial in preventing further unrest and maintaining stability in Ghana’s education sector.
