Thomas Musah Tanko, the General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), revealed to 3news’ Daniel Opoku in Accra on August 12 that the Union’s actions are generating unrest and dissatisfaction among its members, potentially disrupting the peaceful industrial environment.

The Union has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Ministry of Education, demanding the distribution of laptops purchased under the β€˜1-teacher, 1-laptop’ initiative. While more than 3,000 laptops have been distributed nationwide, over 60,000 units remain undelivered since their procurement in 2018.

In July of this year, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, pledged to complete the distribution of laptops by August 31. Mr. Tanko has urged the Minister to adhere to this timeline, noting, β€œThe Minister made the promise to the Labour Commission. We are to report back to the Commission on the 29th. We anticipate that he will fulfill his commitment by then.”

Additionally, Mr. Tanko expressed serious concern regarding the escalating cost of living, highlighting that fuel prices have surged by over 17% from January to June this year. He also pointed out that the price of a bag of cement is currently around GHC100. The General Secretary called upon the government to implement strategies to address these economic challenges.

Regarding the upcoming elections, GNAT has appealed to the Electoral Commission to conduct the elections with impartiality and integrity. β€œIt is essential that the will of the people is accurately reflected, regardless of the outcome. Once the populace has spoken, their decision should be respected,” Mr. Tanko emphasized.

The Association also warned politicians against the use of incendiary language. β€œThere are other stakeholders in the enterprise called Ghana; they are not the only ones. Therefore, they should be cautious with their words, as the power of the tongue can lead to either life or death,” Mr. Tanko advised.
