The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has reiterated its call for the immediate implementation of the 20% Deprived Area Allowance, as promised by President John Mahama.

This allowance, a longstanding component of the teachers’ Conditions of Service, has been plagued by delays despite protracted negotiations between the government and pre-tertiary teacher unions.

In an exclusive interview, Thomas Musah Tanko, General Secretary of GNAT, underscored the imperative of expediting the implementation of this allowance. He highlighted the profound challenges confronted by teachers serving in deprived areas, emphasizing the need for a swift and decisive response.

The 20% Deprived Area Allowance is designed to serve as a vital incentive, motivating teachers to accept postings in under-resourced regions. This, in turn, is critical to enhancing education standards in these areas.

Tanko has urged the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, to ensure that the necessary provisions are incorporated into the 2025 budget, scheduled for presentation next month. The timely implementation of this allowance is deemed essential for addressing the myriad challenges faced by teachers in underserved communities.

The government’s response to this call will be closely monitored by educators nationwide, who eagerly anticipate the realization of this long-awaited benefit.
