GES Prohibits School Heads Against Unauthorized BECE Registration Fees

GES Cautions School Heads Against Unauthorized BECE Registration Fees
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a stern warning to heads of basic schools who are allegedly imposing unauthorized Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) registration fees on final-year students.
In a press release dated February 12, 2025, GES acknowledged concerns circulating on social media regarding some school heads demanding registration fees from students. The management emphasized that such charges are unlawful and must cease immediately.
Directives for Compliance
To enforce this directive, GES has instructed Regional Directors to notify District Directors to monitor the situation closely and caution all heads of basic schools against imposing these fees.
Furthermore, the statement mandated that any school head who has already collected unauthorized fees must issue refunds to affected students without delay. Non-compliance, it warned, would result in sanctions.
Additionally, GES reminded school heads that late registration of candidates would not be permitted, urging them to ensure all eligible students are registered within the timeframe set by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
Public Awareness and Reporting
GES also called on parents, guardians, and the general public to take note of this directive and report any violations to the appropriate authorities.
The statement was signed by Cassandra Twum Ampofo, Head of the GES Public Relations Unit.
Ensuring Fairness in BECE Registration
This directive is part of GESβs broader effort to prevent financial exploitation of students and uphold the government’s mandate for free and accessible BECE registration.
With BECE being a pivotal examination in the education system, GESβs firm stance is expected to provide relief to parents and students alike. The effectiveness of this directive will now depend on rigorous enforcement to curb unauthorized charges across schools.
