GES Makes U-Turn, Orders Sawla SHS to Recall Suspended Students

In a stunning reversal, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed the management of Sawla Senior High School (SHS) in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region to recall over 30 students who were handed indefinite suspensions last Wednesday.
The dramatic turn of events came after the GES discovered that the school had acted unilaterally in meting out the punishments, without consulting the district or regional directorates, and without notifying the parents of the affected students.
According to the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Director of GES, Anthony Kwasi Yeboah, the school’s decision to suspend the students was null and void, as it lacked the requisite authority.
“The headmaster has no power to suspend students, and so we have asked him to recall them,” Mr. Yeboah explained in an interview with JoyNews’ Isaac Nongya.
The students, mostly second-year girls, were suspended following an investigation into allegations of immoral behavior and possession of mobile phones on campus.
However, their suspension sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning the fairness and transparency of the school’s disciplinary process.
The GES’s decision to intervene and recall the suspended students is seen as a major victory for the students and their parents, who had been left reeling by the school’s actions.
As the students prepare to return to school, the GES has assured the public that it will keep a close eye on the situation to ensure that the rights of all students are protected.
