The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has issued a wanted notice for former Finance Minister Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta, declaring him a fugitive from justice.

This decision stems from Ofori-Atta’s failure to appear for questioning regarding multiple corruption-related investigations, despite being directed to do so by the OSP.

According to reports, Ofori-Atta is under investigation for his alleged involvement in several financial irregularities, including the Strategic Mobilization Limited-GRA contract, the termination of the ECG-BXC contract, National Cathedral payments, the ambulance procurement contract, and the utilisation of the Tax Refund Account.

The OSP has indicated that Ofori-Atta may be residing in the United States or the United Kingdom. The notice, which was made public on February 17, 2025, follows the OSP’s declaration of Ofori-Atta as a fugitive from justice and thus a wanted man.

The OSP’s declaration of Ofori-Atta as a wanted man has been met with mixed reactions. Supporters of the action argue that it demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to accountability and transparency, ensuring that public officials are held responsible for their actions.

However, critics claim that the step is politically motivated, designed to tarnish the reputation of a key figure in the previous administration. Some members of the opposition New Patriotic Party have alleged that Ofori-Atta is being targeted, insisting that due process must be followed and that he should be given a fair opportunity to respond to the allegations.

Mr. Ofori-Atta has not publicly responded to the warrant. However, his legal representatives have condemned the OSP’s ‘wanted’ declaration, describing it as a “witch hunt” aimed at discrediting him.

They also explained that Mr. Ofori-Atta is seeking medical care abroad, a piece of information they claim to have given to the OSP in their official response to a letter inviting Mr. Ofori-Atta to the investigative body.

Meanwhile, the OSP is urging the public to provide any information regarding Ofori-Atta’s whereabouts, offering multiple channels, including hotlines and emails.
