Ghana’s newly appointed Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has underscored the need for accurate data on the number of beneficiaries of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme. This call was made during his maiden visit to the Ministry of Education on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

Minister Iddrisu observed that discrepancies exist between the reported number of beneficiaries, with his research indicating 3.9 million students between 2017 and 2023, while public claims and parliamentary records suggest 5.1 million beneficiaries. To address this issue, he has called for the validation of the data to ensure clarity and accountability.

The Minister emphasized that accurate data is essential for effective policy-making and that he is committed to relying on verified information. He reiterated his commitment to President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of making education accessible, relevant, and of high quality.

As part of his agenda, Minister Iddrisu announced plans to convene a National Education Conference to critically assess the state of Ghana’s education system and develop actionable recommendations for reforms. The conference will serve as a platform to bring together educators, policymakers, civil society organisations, and other key stakeholders to collectively shape a sustainable and impactful education system for Ghana.

The Minister’s focus on transparency and evidence-based reforms has been welcomed by stakeholders within the education sector. Many view his leadership as an opportunity to address longstanding challenges and drive meaningful changes that will benefit future generations.
