Dr. Eric Nkansah, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has recently spoken out on the ongoing concerns of degree-holding teachers regarding their salary adjustments and promotion delays, offering a sense of optimism to many teachers who feel their professional progression has been stalled.

In a recent update on social media, Dr. Nkansah reassured teachers of his commitment to resolving these issues. He stated, “Thank you very much for your submission. I want to assure you that management has taken key interest with regards to this issue and will soon share the good news when all is done.”

This announcement comes amidst significant dissatisfaction among teachers across Ghana, many of whom have upgraded their qualifications from diploma to degree but have not yet been promoted to the rank of Principal Superintendent (PS) as expected. The delay in promotions has led to frustration, as these teachers feel that their investment in furthering their education has not been appropriately recognized.

The crux of the issue lies in the perceived inconsistencies within the promotion process. Many teachers who have upgraded their qualifications continue to occupy lower ranks such as Senior Superintendent I and Superintendent II, despite their advanced credentials. This stagnation is viewed as a disservice to their dedication and efforts to enhance their professional skills in line with the evolving educational standards in Ghana.

The prolonged delay in addressing these promotion concerns has prompted some teachers to explore alternative avenues to advocate for their recognition. However, the majority are seeking a transparent and equitable process that acknowledges their professional achievements through official channels rather than informal measures.

Addressing these concerns goes beyond correcting an administrative oversight; it is crucial for boosting teacher morale and encouraging a culture of continuous professional development. By ensuring that promotions are conducted fairly and transparently, the GES will not only improve the morale of its teachers but also contribute to the overall quality of education in Ghana.

Dr. Nkansah’s commitment, along with the GES management’s efforts to resolve these promotion issues, is a positive development. As Ghana’s education sector continues to evolve, actions like these are essential to ensure that the dedicated teachers who are pivotal in shaping the nation’s future are justly recognized and rewarded for their efforts.
