Community of Domeabra Protest Closure of School by Paramount Chief

The Domeabra community in Central Gonja District has expressed strong opposition to the abrupt closure of their local school, ordered unilaterally by Mankpanwura Borenyi Achode I, the Paramount Chief of the Mankpan Traditional Area.
This decision, made without prior consultation with key stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and the education directorate, aims to temporarily relocate health workers from the community clinic to the school’s teachers’ quarters due to ongoing clinic renovations.
While the community acknowledges the importance of improving healthcare facilities, they vehemently object to compromising children’s education in the process.
In a press statement, the Domeabra community expressed dismay over the chief’s decision, emphasizing that education is a fundamental right of every child and suspending it without alternatives disrupts their academic growth.
The community has offered alternative solutions, including providing temporary accommodations for the health workers, but these proposals were dismissed.
Community leaders, including P.T.A. Chairman Nbonwura Abdul Razak and SMC Chairman Alhassan Abdul Rashid, have appealed to relevant authorities to intervene, seeking support from the District Education Directorate, the Ministry of Education, civil society groups, and traditional governance bodies.
The community seeks a resolution by October 25, 2024, failing which they will resort to further action to ensure the school reopens.
They remain hopeful that dialogue will pave the way for a solution that honors the rights of their children without compromising community health services. Notably, another chief, Nana Kusi Oboadum I, previously constructed a classroom block for a local school in Domeabra, demonstrating that chiefs can prioritize education.
The Domeabra community stands firm in its commitment to both education and healthcare, emphasizing the importance of collaborative decision-making and transparency.
They urge authorities to address this pressing issue, ensuring the school’s prompt reopening and safeguarding the educational rights of their children.
