Former President Akufo-Addo Directs Former Government Appointees to Remain in Ghana and Face Accountability

In a significant development, former President Nana Akufo-Addo has issued a directive to his former government appointees, instructing them to remain in Ghana and face accountability for their actions during their tenure.
This directive comes amidst growing calls from the public for transparency and accountability as Ghana transitions into a new political era.
Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), emphasized the party’s unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability. “We [the NPP] have no record of evading accountability; we will be here to address any questions,” Ahiagbah stated categorically.
Ahiagbah’s remarks come in the wake of recent developments involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who was previously declared a fugitive by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). Ofori-Atta’s lawyers subsequently clarified that he had informed the Chief of Staff about his medical condition and his decision to seek treatment abroad, assuring his availability when needed.
Ahiagbah drew a stark contrast between the NPP’s stance on accountability and that of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). He cited instances where NDC members allegedly evaded accountability, highlighting the case of Sedinam Tamakloe, who was tried in absentia.
“Our party has no history of our officials fleeing from accountability,” Ahiagbah asserted. “It was the NDC members who ran away. My own sister, Sedinam Tamakloe, disappeared. She was tried in absentia, but she ought to be here.”
Ahiagbah further revealed that former President Akufo-Addo has issued a directive to ensure that all former appointees remain accessible to address any questions regarding their tenure. “There’s an effective commitment right from the former President himself. He has given a directive to ensure that our people are available to do that,” Ahiagbah explained.
While Ahiagbah chose not to delve into specifics, he confirmed that the former President has emphasized the importance of accountability. Ahiagbah also highlighted the NPP’s focus on preparing for the 2028 elections while ensuring that its members remain accountable for their actions during their time in office.
“Our preoccupation is how we get our party situated and contest the 2028 election. Matters to do with accountabilityβour people will be here to answer the questions,” Ahiagbah assured.
Defending the Akufo-Addo administration’s legacy, Ahiagbah expressed confidence that history would judge the government favorably. “We came to do the best we can. And I believe that when the dust settles, Ghana will see what we have done for the eight years,” he said.
The NPP’s commitment to accountability and transparency comes at a critical time as Ghana navigates the transition of power, with public expectations high for responsible governance and ethical leadership.
