The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology (Leibniz-HKI) is dedicated to investigating the pathobiology of human-pathogenic fungi and identifying targets for the development of novel natural product-based antibiotics. The Department of Paleobiotechnology is currently inviting talented and highly gifted candidates to apply for the position of Doctoral Researcher (f/div/m) in Natural Product Chemistry / Biotechnology for an initial period of three years.
Research Area: The pressing need for new anti-infectives to combat life-threatening diseases calls for innovative approaches in their identification. Our focus lies in the exploration of novel methods to identify and resurrect biosynthetic genes from ancient DNA and metagenomes. Through this, we aim to access previously hidden antibiotics and other bioactive natural products, thereby studying their evolution.
Our research approach is highly interdisciplinary, encompassing various fields such as chemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, lab automation, archaeology, and evolutionary biology. Collaboration plays a crucial role in our work, with our primary partners being biomolecular archaeologists at Harvard University and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. We seek to welcome a doctoral student to our department, someone passionate about exploring this unique source of natural products from ancient times.
Eligibility for The Funded Fully Ph.D. Position in Natural Product Chemistry:
– Applicants must possess an MSc degree with a focus on chemistry, biotechnology, molecular microbiology, biochemistry, or a related field.
– An interest in natural products and lab automation is essential.
– Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work independently.
