Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice-President and flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 Presidential Election, has explained his decision to concede early after the polls.

He noted that the move was made to maintain the peace and stability of the country.

Addressing members of the diplomatic corps who visited him at the Jubilee House on the morning of December 23, 2024, Dr. Bawumia stated that the NPP’s internal collation system confirmed the party’s loss in the early hours following the election.

According to him, delaying the concession until the Electoral Commission (EC) officially announced the results could have created unnecessary tension and risked potential disturbances or violence.

He expressed concern about the economic and security implications such unrest could have on the nation, especially as Ghana works to recover from recent economic challenges.

Dr. Bawumia also highlighted the possible ripple effects of violence on the sub-region, cautioning against situations that could provide opportunities for terrorist groups to exploit and spread instability.

The Vice-President’s decision, he emphasized, was guided by a commitment to protecting the nation’s peace, security, and economic progress.
