Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has accused the government of President John Mahama of engaging in widespread and arbitrary dismissals of public sector workers, calling the actions unfair and politically motivated.

In an open letter, Dr. Bawumia expressed concern over the termination of numerous employees, particularly those hired during the previous administration.

He emphasised that these dismissals extend beyond political appointees, affecting career public servants such as directors, security personnel, nurses, and teachers.

β€œIt is ironic that a party which campaigned on the wings of jobs for all Ghanaians is arbitrarily dismissing the same Ghanaians, rendering them jobless,” Dr. Bawumia stated, adding that the dismissals undermine efforts to tackle unemployment.

His comment comes after the Chief of Staff’s directive to revoke all public sector appointments made after 7 December 2024, a decision government described as not β€˜politically motivated’.

But the 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia warned that dismissing individuals solely based on their perceived political affiliations sets a dangerous precedent and erodes confidence in public institutions. He also highlighted that some employees lost their jobs simply because they were known to or related to politicians of the previous administration, rather than on the basis of merit or performance.

Call for Reversal of Decisions

Dr. Bawumia urged President Mahama to reverse these dismissals and protect public servants from politically driven job losses. He emphasised that governance should be about inclusion and fairness, rather than political retribution.

β€œWe must advance our democracy. We must protect our state institutions. We must uphold our Constitution,” he asserted, stressing the need for Ghana to prioritise national development over political vendettas.
