On Friday, December 27, 2024, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo inaugurated the Accra Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Academy, a flagship institution aimed at advancing education in STEM disciplines.

He noted, “The establishment of this Academy reflects our unwavering belief that STEM education is essential to unlocking the potential of our nation and empowering the next generation.”
Highlighting the evolving global landscape, President Akufo-Addo stressed that technology is at the forefront of transformation in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, transportation, and industry. He remarked, “To secure Ghana’s place in the future, it is imperative that we prepare our youth with the necessary tools to excel. STEM education is no longer optional—it is fundamental.”
The President described the Academy as a platform to inspire innovative thinking and foster problem-solving skills. “This is where young Ghanaians will develop the ability to dream beyond limits, critically analyze challenges, and create solutions for a brighter future. It is a space for cultivating expertise in robotics, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and other groundbreaking fields,” he said.
He also mentioned the broader national effort to expand STEM education, including the establishment of 20 STEM centers and 10 model STEM Senior High Schools equipped with cutting-edge resources. These initiatives, he explained, are designed to provide students with practical learning opportunities in advanced fields such as coding and robotics, ensuring they are well-prepared for the modern economy.
“By prioritizing STEM education, this Academy will transform the learning experience and equip our students with future-ready skills,” he concluded.
Dr. Eric Nkansah, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), lauded the launch, describing it as a visionary step. “The Accra STEM Academy is a long-term investment in Ghana’s progress. Its impact will resonate across generations,” he said.
Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, also celebrated the milestone in a social media post, calling it a transformative initiative. “This institution is redefining education in Ghana by equipping our youth with the expertise to lead in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Together, we are laying the foundation for a future driven by innovation and limitless possibilities,” he wrote.
