The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has disclosed that approximately 5,000 schools nationwide are still operating without proper infrastructure.
Speaking at a public forum on education in Accra on Monday, February 17, he highlighted the significant infrastructure deficit, stating, “We have an infrastructure deficit of about five thousand schools still under trees.”
He assured the public of the government’s commitment to addressing this challenge through substantial investments in educational infrastructure. According to him, the first phase of this initiative will be outlined in the 2025 budget statement. “There will be massive investment in education infrastructure, with the first phase being unveiled in the 2025 budget statement,” he said, emphasizing the government’s dedication to bridging the infrastructure gap.
The issue of schools under trees has been a persistent challenge, particularly in rural and under-resourced areas. This term refers to the practice of holding classes outdoors under trees or in deteriorating pavilions due to a lack of adequate school buildings. These conditions stem from limited access to formal educational facilities and chronic underfunding in certain regions.
In response to these challenges, the government has initiated several measures, including the formation of a National Education Reform Committee. This committee is tasked with gathering public input and providing recommendations to reshape the education sector.
President Mahama has also reaffirmed his administrationβs commitment to prioritizing education, with a focus on making it both accessible and of high quality.
