The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, reassured Ghanaians at the opening of the maiden African Nurses and Midwives Confederation conference in Accra that no nurse or midwife recruited after December 7, 2024, will face dismissal.

He emphasized that neither the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service, nor the Catholic Health Association of Ghana has terminated any health worker’s employment.

The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to building and sustaining a robust health workforce, pledging full support—including the provision of necessary logistical resources—to enhance healthcare delivery.

Perpetual Ofori Ampofo, President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), expressed confidence in the minister’s assurance, noting that the association has relied on his word. She stressed the importance of continued collaboration with the Ministry of Health to meet the nation’s health priorities.

Furthermore, she highlighted that adequate investment in career progression, study leave, and other motivational measures is essential to empower nurses and midwives, who play a significant role in driving both public health and economic development.

The five-day conference, which concludes on February 24, 2025, sees participation from 17 African countries under the theme “Nurses and Midwives, Fostering Health for All in Africa.”

The event underscores the critical role of these professionals in diverse sectors—ranging from clinical practice and research to education and preventive healthcare—and serves as a platform for regional networking and advocacy in support of improved health outcomes across the continent.
