Akufo Addo’s statue came as a surprise – Western Region Chiefs

The Paramount Chief of Lower Dixcove, Nana Akwasi Agyeman IV, has categorically denied allegations suggesting that the Western Region chiefs contributed to the construction of a statue in honor of former President Akufo-Addo, located outside the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital in Sekondi. The statue was unveiled during Akufo-Addo’s thank-you tour of the region in November 2024.
In a recent interview, Nana Agyeman expressed his astonishment at the statue’s existence, revealing that he had been misled into participating in the unveiling ceremony by former Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah. “Initially, I opted not to comment on the statue due to the insults we chiefs have endured,” Nana Agyeman stated.
However, he deemed it essential to set the record straight, emphasizing that the statue was not commissioned by the Western Region chiefs and that no chief contributed to its construction.
Nana Agyeman clarified that the matter was never discussed at any House of Chiefs meeting. As a regular attendee of these meetings, he would have been aware if such a decision had been made.
The Paramount Chief explained that he and other chiefs were invited to meet the former president at the GNAT Hall, where Mr. Darko Mensah approached him with an invitation to present a token of appreciation to the president at Effia-Nkwanta Hospital. It was only upon arrival that Nana Agyeman discovered the “gift” was a statue.
Despite his reservations, Nana Agyeman participated in the unveiling ceremony, making it clear that his remarks were personal and not on behalf of the Western Region chiefs.
The Paramount Chief took the opportunity to thank the president for visiting him during his hospitalization in 2019, but he emphasized that his comments were not representative of the region’s chiefs.
The controversy surrounding the statue has sparked intense debate, with some questioning the legitimacy of the project. According to reports, President Akufo-Addo addressed the local community during the unveiling ceremony, highlighting his administration’s achievements and emphasizing that 80% of his commitments to Ghanaians had been realized.
This development has raised concerns about the potential misuse of power and resources. The denial by Nana Agyeman and the Western Region chiefs underscores the need for transparency and accountability in governance.
As the discussion surrounding the statue continues, it is essential to examine the underlying issues and ensure that the interests of the Ghanaian people are prioritized.
