The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally confirmed its leadership structure for the 9th Parliament, outlining the party’s strategy for managing legislative affairs in the upcoming session.

The newly appointed leadership team comprises:

– Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader

– Patricia Apiagyei, Deputy Minority Leader

– Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Chief Whip

– Habib Iddrisu, First Deputy Minority Whip

Davies Opoku, Second Deputy Minority Whip

Following the leadership confirmations, the NPP will convene a meeting with its Members of Parliament-elect to brief them on their roles and responsibilities in preparation for the official opening of the 9th Parliament.

This leadership selection underscores the NPP’s commitment to maintaining cohesion and ensuring effective parliamentary management, even as the party adapts to a new political landscape.

The NPP’s new leadership faces significant challenges in the wake of a substantial electoral setback in the 2024 general elections. The party secured 81 seats in the 9th Parliament, a notable decline from the 137 seats held in the 8th Parliament.

In contrast, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged as the dominant party, securing over 180 seats and becoming the majority in the 9th Parliament.

As the NPP navigates this shift in power dynamics, its leadership will play a crucial role in managing opposition strategies and influencing legislative priorities in the new Parliament.
