The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has announced plans to embark on a strike in January 2025 if the government fails to address several unresolved issues.

This decision stems from repeated breaches of agreements signed earlier in 2024, according to a statement released on Monday, December 23.

CETAG stated that their National Council convened an emergency meeting on December 20 to address the government’s failure to fulfill obligations, including a compulsory arbitration award issued by the National Labour Commission (NLC) in May 2023.

KEY GRIEVANCES HIGHLIGHTED BY CETAG INCLUDE

1. Failure to complete migration of staff to affiliate universities’ pay structure: The government has not implemented this process, despite a 20-month timeline.

2. Delayed issuance of appointment letters: New letters based on staff audit reports and the affiliate universities’ scheme of service remain unissued.

3. Non-payment of compensation: The government has failed to pay a one-month basic salary to 42 colleges as compensation for extra work completed in 2022, as directed by the NLC.

4. Non-payment of top-up allowances: Staff at Akrokerri College of Education have not received the agreed top-up for book and research allowances for 2023.

CETAG emphasized its commitment to resolving the issues through dialogue, citing engagements with various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. However, these discussions have yielded no significant outcomes.

The association expressed its frustration over the government’s repeated violations of agreements, despite previous assurances.

CETAG urged all stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, principals of colleges, and affiliate universities, to work toward resolving the issues promptly to prevent further disruptions to the academic calendar.

CETAG warned that if their demands are not met by December 31, 2024, they would initiate an indefinite strike in accordance with Section 159 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).
