WAEC Announces Christmas Break Date Amid Postponement of 2024 WASSCE Results
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced December 20, 2024, as the start of its Christmas break, following the postponement of the release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for school candidates.
John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, revealed the break date during an interview with an Accra-based radio station monitored by GhanaEducation.org. He described the delay in releasing the 2024 WASSCE results—originally slated for the second week of December—as unprecedented and concerning, citing significant challenges faced by the organization.
Financial Constraints Hindering Results Release
According to Kapi, WAEC’s ability to release the WASSCE results has been severely impacted by financial constraints. He disclosed that the government owes the Council approximately GH₵118 million, with an additional GH₵25 million required to repair essential scanners used for processing objective test results.
He explained that while the office is officially breaking for Christmas on December 20, staff may be recalled during the festive period to finalize the results if the government releases the necessary funds.
“Unfortunately, the results are not ready. We issued a statement earlier highlighting some of the challenges we are currently facing. These challenges persist because we have not been able to secure the necessary funds to address them,” Kapi stated in an interview with Citi FM.
Technicians Suspend Services Over Debt
The WAEC official further disclosed that technicians responsible for repairing the scanners used to process WASSCE objective sheets have suspended their services due to unpaid arrears totaling GH₵25 million.
“We needed to repair our scanners because we owe the technicians GH₵25 million, and they have withdrawn their services until we make some financial commitments,” Kapi told Citi FM.
He emphasized that while private schools pay their examination fees directly, the government is responsible for covering fees for public school candidates. The delay in receiving these funds has left WAEC unable to release the results.
2024 WASSCE Overview
The 2024 WASSCE for School Candidates commenced on August 5, 2024, and concluded on September 20, 2024. A total of 460,611 candidates, comprising 212,954 boys and 247,657 girls from 1,003 second-cycle schools, registered for the examination. The exams were conducted across 1,000 centers nationwide.
Uncertain Release Date for Results
With only a few weeks remaining in 2024, the lack of funding has left WAEC unable to provide a specific release date for the WASSCE results. As financial challenges persist, the Council’s ability to meet expectations remains uncertain, raising concerns among candidates and stakeholders alike.
Stay tuned for further updates as WAEC continues to navigate these challenges.
