The Ghana Education Service (GES) has demonstrated its commitment to excellence in education by organizing a comprehensive capacity-building workshop for educational leaders. This strategic initiative aimed to strengthen the leadership and management skills of Regional, Deputy Regional, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Directors of Education, as well as General Managers of Educational Units.

The two-day workshop was divided into two cohorts and held in Kumasi and Koforidua. The first cohort, comprising 157 directors from Ahafo, Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East, Upper West, and Western North regions, took place from October 7 to 8, 2024. The second cohort, consisting of 142 participants from Central, Eastern, Greater Accra, Oti, Volta, and Western regions, attended from October 10 to 11, 2024.

Dr. Eric Nkansah, GES Director-General, emphasized the importance of embracing management’s efforts to promote staff development and welfare, commending directors for their dedication to improving education. Mr. Stephen Kwaku Owusu, Deputy Director-General in charge of Management Services, highlighted the workshop’s strategic significance in enhancing productivity and daily operations.

Experienced facilitators from GES headquarters covered critical topics, including legal matters, procurement, guidance and counselling, auditing, and the Ghana Education Service Management Information System (GESMIS). Additional presentations included mental health management, leadership for sustainability and improvement of learning outcomes, and payroll issues.

The Besstel Foundation emphasized the importance of mental well-being in leadership roles, while Dr. Joseph Cobbinah led an engaging session on leadership for sustainability. Michael Arku Kelly addressed pertinent payroll concerns.

This capacity-building initiative demonstrates GES’s commitment to empowering educational leaders with necessary tools and knowledge. By investing in its leaders, GES aims to improve productivity, ensure effective daily operations, and drive better educational outcomes nationwide.
