Just hours before the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for final-year Junior High School students, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) issued a new update regarding the 2024 Free Senior High School (SHS) school selection process.

According to the Ghana Education Service (GES), the selection process will start immediately after the BECE concludes on Monday, July 15, 2024. This was announced in a press release from GES dated July 7, 2024.

The relevant portion of the press release stated, “Parents, candidates, and the general public are informed that the school selection process will commence after the BECE. Details of the selection process will be communicated in due course.”

With the 2024–2025 academic year introducing a new SHS curriculum and 36 subjects instead of the previous 63, GES, in collaboration with the Free SHS Secretariat and other public education agencies, is expected to release an updated school selection process and procedures.

During the 2023 school selection phase, candidates could select up to 11 schools from categories A to D. However, over 100,000 candidates were not automatically placed, necessitating the use of the self-placement module of the Computerised School Selection System (CSSPS).

Parents and schools must collaborate to ensure the selection of schools and programs that align with the applicant’s career aspirations, academic strengths, and capabilities.

In recent years, the government has emphasized the importance of enrolling in technical, vocational, and STEM-related programs. These programs are expected to be central to the school selection process to align the country’s human resources with its developmental goals.

Parents are advised to choose schools for their wards based on academic strengths and capabilities rather than personal preferences.

Stay updated on this portal and the GES website for the latest information on the school selection process and timelines.
